“I am campaigning for the comeback of lip liner,” announces Terry Barber, director of make-up artistry at M.A.C. Fellow make-up artist Andrew Gallimore agrees, as he wields not one but two lip pencils at the Holly Fulton show, creating exaggerated, pumped-up pouts inspired by full-mouthed French actress Béatrice Dalle. But it’s not just lips getting the liner treatment. Eyes, too, have seen slashes and swipes of black eyeliner throughout LFW so far, most notably at Preen (right), where make-up artist Val Garland used minimalist graphic flourishes to add a delicate dash of rock’n’roll attitude. At the Vivienne Westwood Red Label show, Garland, in contrast, used her painterly skills to mimic illustrative techniques around models’ eyes to create an almost mask-like effect. The universal rule? Be precise and go easy – this look relies on accuracy and a light touch.
