new boutique salon, toppers of hackney
report by Yasmin Coke

We’ve all been there: entered a hair salon with a picture of our favourite runway haircut-look in hand, hoping to be transformed into a fashion-week style icon, but one cut and blow later, it’s a ‘Fine, thanks’ lie to the hairdresser, hat on and home in tears.

New boutique salon Toppers of Hackney, a delightful reinvention of an original salon in London’s fashionable East End, aims to banish this experience for good, with personalised styling and an inspiring interior at its core.

The vintage vibe (all stripped-back walls and Deco dressing tables adorned with old photographs of childhood sweethearts and loved ones) brings on a sense of nostalgia and reminds you of those dressing-up days in your parents’ bedroom. It’s a perfect setting to relax in, ask for what you really want and get it, whether your style is minimal chic or updo with attitude.

“Our hair is a crucial part of our personal look, but you can go into a hairdresser’s and come away looking branded with the salon’s style,” says co-owner Jane Money. “We wanted to create an individual space where you could be comfortable, be yourself and come out with your own look.”

Style Director Angela Morgan loved the idea of moving from her West End salon to a space near her Hackney home. “It’s great to be bringing high-quality fashionable cuts to Hackney,” she says. “I love the fact that here I’m doing everything from creating a just-got-out-of-bed look for one client to precision-cut preppy for another.”

The salon’s decor (by Hackney-based interiors people The Dog and Wardrobe), the small team and the offer of tea in handpicked vintage crockery, or Prosecco if you’re feeling wild, make Toppers – named after the salon’s original name– a home-away-from-home for Hackney’s fashionable crowd.

Toppers is part of a renaissance of Wilton Way, an erstwhile rundown local street – so take a look at Borough Wines and stop off for coffee in the Wilton Way Cafe while you’re there. In a retro-tastic moment, Wilton Way also played host to a Royal Wedding street party, and you can see photographer Claire Lewington’s captured moments in an exhibition at the salon, while you’re having your personalised do. Style icon, here we come!
